Wenham backs David Pleat as ex-Tottenham employee slams Daniel Levy 'Nonsense'

John Wenham understands David Pleat’s anger after the former Tottenham employee was let go by the club.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose claims the 79-year-old isn’t someone to hold back about how he feels.

Pleat was dismissed by Tottenham at the end of last season, having acted as a consultant scout for the club since 2010. He previously spent time as the club’s sporting director, as well as caretaker manager on three occasions.

Speaking publicly for the first time since leaving Spurs, Pleat said (The Telegraph, 10 September), “I was called in and informed, ‘It’s all data-driven now we don’t need eyes and ears.’ What nonsense.

“Data is all well and good when it enhances eyes and ears, not replaces them. I didn’t argue.”

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – completely understands how Pleat feels.

“I have met David quite a few times, he is someone who says it as it is,” Wenham said.

“To be honest, I’m completely with him on the point of scouting. You’ll never fully know about a player until he has passed the eye test.

“Whatever data tells you, by going and watching the player yourself you get a better sense. Therefore, I’m totally with him on that point.

“He has served the club well for many years, and if he feels harshly done by, then he is someone who is going to say how he feels and won’t be afraid of losing any privileges with the club.”

Pleat identified players such as Jan Vertonghen, Dele Alli and Ben Davies.

Therefore, it is fair to say that he had quite an eye for talent. As a result, Spurs could have perhaps benefited from keeping hold of him.

However, that was not to be, with the club now moving in a brand-new direction as explained by Levy to Pleat, in what could prove to be yet another unpopular move by the Spurs chairman.

While data and analysis tools are helpful, it is always a bonus for an experienced scout to catch a glimpse of the player in action too.

And it seems as though there would have been few better for the job than Pleat.

In other Tottenham news, one youth sensation should be handed his first-team debut after a “superb” moment recently.
