Wenham: It might take Van de Ven crushing blow for Tottenham to cough up £50m for new signing

John Wenham does not believe Tottenham target Ilya Zabarnyi is worth £50million.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose can’t see the club signing another centre-back at this moment in time.

As reported by CaughtOffside (15 November), both Chelsea and Tottenham are interested in Bournemouth defender Zabarnyi, who the Cherries value at £50million.

However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think the 22-year-old has done enough in the Premier League to justify this kind of fee.

“Zabarnyi was originally linked with Spurs a while back,” Wenham said.

“He was seen as a real option for the left-sided centre-back role. Bournemouth then went and signed him for £18million. However, I don’t think he has since done enough to justify being worth double that fee and then some.

“Spurs already have several centre-backs, including some promising young ones. Therefore, I don’t see the club signing another player in that position. Especially not in January, unless either Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven were to pick up a very long-term injury.”

Tottenham to avoid signing Bournemouth centre-back Ilya Zabarnyi?

Spurs very rarely spend upward of £45million on transfers. As a result, it is difficult to see them splashing that kind of cash on a player who they arguably don’t need right now.

The need for a centre-back could yet arise amid long-term doubts over Cristian Romero’s future at the club.

However, Zabarnyi is a different profile of player to Romero and arguably wouldn’t be the most ideal replacement.

As a result, with these factors considered as well as the interest of Chelsea, who have proven they don’t mind spending big fees on players, it seems unlikely that Zabarnyi will end up in North London.

In other Tottenham news, a verdict on Paul Poga potentially joining the club has emerged.
