Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the club have signed Chelsea star Ian Maatsen at a £15million discount.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the 22-year-old’s signing is a “statement of intent” from the Midlands club.
Villa announced the arrival of Maatsen last week (28 June), with the Netherlands international signing for Unai Emery’s side after a successful loan with Borussia Dortmund.
Football Insider revealed on 20 June that the club have agreed a initial fee of £35million with Chelsea, with a further £5million payable in add-ons.
Maatsen made 23 appearances for Dortmund in the second half of last season as they reached the final of the Champions League.
Maatsen deal is ‘statement of intent’ for Aston Villa, says Wyness
Wyness claimed Villa fans “are going to love” watching the young defender, who can also play in various attacking roles.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “What a signing – I think this is absolutely setting a statement of intent.
“This is a player who has adapted to a European style of football, it gives him options – and that’s where Emery’s strengths lie, giving himself plenty of options.
“Maatsen is a very exciting signing. I think the valuation is low. I thought he’d be closer to the £50million mark.
“Villa fans are going to love him.
“He’s an exciting player. Emery is bringing in more options, and it allows him to change styles mid-game.
“I think Villa are again going to be a very exciting team to watch next season.”
