Cole Palmer is stealing the headlines for Chelsea after scoring an incredible four goals against Brighton on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
Last season, under Mauricio Pochettino, he was the main guy and that hasn’t changed now that Enzo Maresca has entered the building.
But Owen Hargreaves senses that one other player within the Chelsea squad is perhaps being overlooked, not purposely, but because of Palmer’s brilliance.
You can’t hide what the England international did against Brighton, Palmer became the first player to score four goals in the first half of a Premier League game, which is quite remarkable given the legendary figures that have donned this big stage.
A lot has been made of Chelsea’s spending in recent times, but this Palmer purchase has been beyond incredible and one of the best in recent times.
But another deal they concluded this summer might also prove to be a masterstroke by the powers that be at the Bridge.
Jadon Sancho has assisted in all three Premier League matches he has played for Chelsea, including against Brighton.
There has been a lot of negative noise around the player in recent times, including Chelsea bringing him to the club on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United after a falling out with manager Erik ten Hag.
That’s why Hargreaves was keen to point out ‘what about Sancho’ when lauding and applauding Palmer’s brilliance.
The former Bayern Munich star has stated that Sancho has ’sneaked into this Chelsea team’ and started to make things happen, including winning the penalty against Brighton, as he told Premier League Productions (28/09/24 at 8:15 pm).
Jadon Sancho assists Cole Palmer for Chelsea again
“What about Jadon Sancho, by the way,” pointed out Hargreaves. “He sneaks into this Chelsea team, wins the penalty and sets one up before that.
“Okay, let’s be honest, Cole Palmer is playing in a different league to anybody in the Premier League. He could argue that he could win the Premier League Player of the Year last season, in terms of numbers, goals and assists.
“But in terms of finishing, this is insane (free-kick goal). He shouldn’t score from there. Top bins. He barely even celebrates. I think he is one of the most clinical finishers in the Premier League. I think it’s Haaland, then it’s him. In front of the goal, he is lethal.”
Will Jadon Sancho prove Erik ten Hag wrong?
The fact of the matter is that Sancho has been allowed to go out on loan twice – last season to Borussia Dortmund and now to Chelsea.
Sancho helped Dortmund reach the final of the Champions League last season and proved his worth back at his old club.
But now how he needs to do it in the Premier League and the Chelsea stage is the perfect one for him to show ten Hag that he was wrong in booting him out.
Maresca’s side have made a brilliant start to the new season, they are sitting in the top four and are also favourites to win the Conference League, so it’s all looking up for Sancho.
