Everton are a club for a “firefighter” manager like Sean Dyche, according to Darren Ambrose.
The former Premier League midfielder, speaking live on talkSPORT with Danny Mills [8 October, 21:42], said Dyche is seen as that manager who arrives at clubs and steers them away from danger, but there is a wonder if he can take another style of job.
Mills admitted this is not known, and made the same comparison to Sam Allardyce in a bygone era during his iconic period with Bolton Wanderers.
Ambrose said: “What I will say about Sean Dyche is that, yes, he’s that firefighter who saves teams from relegation like an Everton or a Burnley, but can he play other styles?”
“We don’t know – we had it with Big Sam [Allardyce], he was always criticised for playing a certain way with his Bolton team,” replied Mills.
“They had Djorkaeff, Okocha, Hierro – they could play. But you [play direct] for a couple of seasons and you get labelled.”
Sean Dyche compared to Sam Allardyce amid Everton state
Everton’s style of play and status in the Premier League – and whether Dyche is the right individual to help lead them into higher ambitions – has been widely debated this season.
A poor start became a solid finish last season, which many hoped would lay the foundations for this season and while that has not happened, the Toffees are at least beginning to show improvements.
Everton should not be adapting to what English football perceives to be “moving with the times” in terms of style of play, nor should they be compromising any principles Dyche holds.
He has shown he can consistently deliver what the club need this season, and that is to secure a spot in the top flight for when they move to Bramley-Moore Dock.
Dyche is a manager who took a Burnley side to seventh in 2018, qualifying for the Europa League. He has shown shades of capabilities to steer a club to the next level, the same way as Allardyce in the previous chapter of the English football story, and should be backed.
