What the English media said about Darwin Nunez's display for Liverpool against Girona in the Champions League

Liverpool booked their spot in the Champions League knockout with a 1-0 victory over Spanish side Girona FC on Tuesday evening.

The Reds won in Catalonia by a single goal as the ever-reliable Mohamed Salah his spot kick to secure a decisive three points. Arne Slot’s side are now top of the Champions League group and into the Round of 16 with two games to spare.

However, it was a bad night for Darwin Nunez who had a tricky evening in front of goal and his display has left the English media all saying the same thing.

Darwin Nunez’s lackluster display vs Girona

Darwin Nunez’s tricky spell for Liverpool continued in the Champions League as the striker proved wasteful against Girona. The striker missed some good opportunities to extend Liverpool’s lead, however, he failed to take them.

Given how highly competitive the Merseyside club’s front line is right now, the Uruguayan won’t have done himself any favours with such a poor showing. After the match, the English media were all in agreement over his display.

Liverpool Echo rated his display 5/10 and wrote: “Had two good chances to open the scoring before break but struck both of them at Gazzaniga. Second half one of diminishing returns. Looks short of confidence. Subbed.” It was another 5/10 from GOAL who said: “Had some good chances but was not clinical enough and failed to beat Gazzaniga in the Girona goal.”

ESPN were slightly more generous giving him 6/10: “Tested the goalkeeper after he was found from positive runs in behind but looked frustrated with his finishes. Could have done better when found by Szoboszlai when trying to knock the ball down in the six yard box.”

Darwin Nunez completes just four passes vs Girona

Nunez struggled to really get himself involved at Estadi Montilivi as he managed just 16 touches and completed four of his eight passes. The striker had one big chance which he ended up spurning and left fans questioning why Slot didn’t withdraw him sooner.

Following the win in Spain, Slot revealed he kept Nunez on to boost his confidence with a goal, but unfortunately, that finish never came and he was withdrawn after 71 minutes.
