Jefte will be working with Rangers coaches to avoid ever making the same “absolutely bizarre” error again after his role in Motherwell’s opener on Sunday, says Derek Ferguson.
The former Ibrox favourite was left wondering “what the hell” the Brazilian was doing when he ran in the opposite direction from a Steve Sneddon cross at Hampden Park on 3 November, allowing ex-Gers ace Andy Halliday to steal in and score.
The goal left Ferguson raging at friend and Rangers supporter Halliday for netting against Philippe Clement’s side, and had the likes of Michael Stewart branding it “absolutely criminal” defending on the Premier Sports match commentary, while another former Light Blues defender, Alan Hutton, called it the “craziest” he’d seen on the same broadcast.
Ferguson accepts that the 20-year-old left-back has largely been a positive addition to the squad since his summer arrival from Fluminense, and expects him to learn a lot from skipping over his defensive duties in favour of a counter-attack that never came.
He is sure that the youngster and the Ibrox coaching staff will have been focusing on the incident since as part of his learning curve in Glasgow.
Jefte arrived at the second time of asking after Clement was made to wait in the previous January window, after complications involving his loan at Cypriot side APOEL [Daily Record, 28 January].
Andy Halliday took advantage of Rangers vs for Motherwell
“Bizarre, absolutely bizarre,” Ferguson said, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News.
“He’s obviously thinking, in his mind, that the cross is going to be gathered by [Jack] Butland, so he’s already on the offensive. He’s already thinking that they’re going to start an attack.
“Listen, the young man’s done, in my opinion, very well since he’s come into the side. He’s got pace, he’s got power, but the learning curve is [to] defend first and foremost, wait till you’ve got safe possession of the ball and then go on the attack.
“I just think it was one of them [where] he’s anticipating you’re going to get possession of the ball, Butland’s going to gather it, but that’s all credit to Andy [Halliday] because he came in on the blind-side, out of the blue, he doesn’t even see him.
“As a young defender he’ll look back at that and the coaches’ll go over that with him, so that’s a big learning curve for the young man.
“A wee bit bizarre at the time because you’re thinking, ‘What the hell are you doing?’
“Aye, listen. I don’t think he’ll make that mistake again, that’s for sure.”
