Derek Ferguson has told Philippe Clement to start both Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane together in a strike partnership.
The Nigerian international was preferred to lead the line for the Light Blues’ Europa League defeat to Lyon on Thursday (3 October) after Igamane struggled to make an impact against Hibernian at Ibrox.
Although Open Goal pundit Ferguson believes Clement will be reluctant to start both forwards together, he believes the 21-year-old would benefit from playing alongside the more experienced Dessers.
Speaking on The Open Goal YouTube channel (3 October, 57:00) he said: “He’d [Igamane] be better up there with Dessers.
“But he won’t do that. I would like to see that certainly at home, but I don’t think he’s ever going to do it. I think he’s only ever going to go with the loan striker with two widemen.
“I think with Igamane, why not try it? Something again a wee bit different.”
What has happened to Hamza Igamane at Rangers and Ibrox?
It is clear that Igamane is an incredibly raw talent. While the forward has shown his quality in moments during his time at Rangers, he doesn’t quite look ready to lead the line on the biggest stage week in and week out.
During the win over Hibernian, he seemed to be popping up all over the pitch and therefore leaving a gaping hole at the top end of the field in exactly the position that Dessers tends to occupy.
On paper, playing the two forwards alongside one another would therefore eradicate that issue as there would be two very different strikers for the likes of Nedim Bajrami and Tom Lawrence to play off of in attack.
Unfortunately, as Ferguson suggests it does seem unlikely that Clement will be willing to experiment with this new look system.
The Belgian was reluctant to ever play Dessers alongside Danilo last term and that is unlikely to change now that Igamane is in the mix instead.
