‘Will dislike him’: Ian Wright says £55m player could be about to really annoy Liverpool supporters

Liverpool weren’t the busiest in the summer transfer window, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.
Indeed, while the Reds only made two signings in the summer, they were initially looking to spend big money on Martin Zubimendi.
Zubimendi was strongly linked with Liverpool in the summer, but, ultimately, the midfielder turned the Reds down as he decided to stay at Real Sociedad.
With the January transfer window approaching, more stories about Zubimendi are emerging.
Rodri has been ruled out for the season, so Zubimendi is also linked to Manchester City.
Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been discussing this rumour, and he’s noted that there could be repercussions with Zubimendi in terms of his reception from Liverpool supporters.
Martin Zubimendi risks angering Liverpool fans
Zubimendi famously rejected Liverpool in the summer, and now, there’s a chance he could be headed to one of their biggest rivals.
Of course, this isn’t an alien situation for Liverpool, the Reds have missed out on targets to big rivals on numerous occasions – Leny Yoro joined Manchester United this summer as an example, while Phil Jones made a similar move all those years ago.
“If you feel that something’s not quite right in the air for City at the moment, because Rodri’s gone, you know, God forbid anything happens to Haaland in their respect. But you could see why they probably have to go for someone like Zubimendi in January,” Wright said.
“If he does go to City, then he knows that for the rest of his life, Liverpool fans will dislike him a little bit. It’s the kind of fan base you don’t want to turn down and let them know about it.
“But like if Zubimendi goes there, then you think to yourself, okay, they’ve recognised, but that link alone for me says that City know, we need to do something.”
How Martin Zubimendi feels about leaving Real Sociedad
Manchester City are interested in signing Zubimendi, but, as Liverpool found out this summer, getting the midfielder out of San Sebastian is no easy feat.
Indeed, the midfielder is very settled at his current club, and according to Steve Kay, Zubimendi really doesn’t care about signing for one of Europe’s elite sides.
“According to people I’ve been talking to he’s a strange man, he’s a strange character,” Kay said.
“He’s someone who doesn’t care about playing for teams like Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal. He’s happy to play where he is, finish fourth, fifth or sixth. He loves where he lives and that’s him. The Matt Le Tissier of La Liga I suppose,” Kay said.
Zubimendi is happy to stay at Real Sociedad, and that may scupper any chance of Manchester City signing him this summer.
