Winner named in Everton, Fulham & Ipswich race for new loan deal with medical scheduled - report

Everton and Fulham have lost out to Ipswich Town in the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to East Anglian Daily Times.

The news outlet reported on 15 August that he’s now travelling to Suffolk to undergo his medical ahead of the game on Saturday, 17 August, against Liverpool at Portman Road.

The 28-year-old will be joining Kieran McKenna’s side on a season-long loan deal.

Phillips’ wages, even on a loan, could be substantial and given the club’s financial situation, avoiding high wage bills for a player with recent fitness and form issues could be prudent.

The midfielder has struggled with fitness and form at both Manchester City and during his loan at West Ham.

His limited game time and the criticism from Pep Guardiola about his weight suggest a player not fully in sync with top-level demands, which could be a risk for Everton.

The Toffees would be looking for players who can immediately contribute without the baggage of proving themselves again.

Phillips, needing to rediscover his Leeds form, might not fit into a squad requiring players who are match-ready.

With only a certain number of loan spots available, the Merseyside outfit might have preferred to keep those for players with a more guaranteed impact or for positions of greater need.
