Arsenal appear to have beaten Celtic and Rangers in the race to the services of St Johnstone youngster Callan Hamill, according to The Athletic.

The news outlet reported on 12 August that he turned down advances from the Old Firm clubs and is now expected to move to the Emirates Stadium next summer.

The 15-year-old Scottish defender has travelled down to train twice with the Arsenal under-18s and signed a one-year extension at St Johnstone on 12 August.

Rangers must focus on recruiting players for the first team

Missing out on Hamill is a blow for the Ibrox outfit, but the club must prioritise recruiting players for the first team, which is a more pressing need.

While the teenager’s potential is undeniable, Gers’ focus should be on strengthening their first team to compete domestically and in European competitions.

The club have already made several signings this summer, but there is still a need for reinforcements in key positions.

Philippe Clement must address the team’s weaknesses and ensure that the squad is well-equipped to challenge for titles.
