'We have had conversations' - Exit-linked Rangers star makes new Ibrox transfer admission

Jack Butland has admitted he would expect Rangers to turn down a transfer approach for him ahead of the August deadline.

The England international was the subject of plenty of speculation heading into the summer window after Nottingham Forest saw an approach knocked back by the Light Blues in January [Daily Record, 30 January].

While some pundits have expected the keeper to exit Glasgow before the window slams shut, Butland admits that he has already held discussions with the Gers’ hierarchy over both his and the club’s future.

As quoted by the Rangers Review (12 August) he said: “Yeah, I think we have a good relationship. There is an idea of what we want to achieve and ultimately I want to be successful here.

“We have had conversations. My conversation with the club has been what are we doing, where are we going, how far are we going and how far are we pushing?

“Any player at any club, that’s what you want to know – the ambition. For me, no cloudy areas over that I am looking forward to the season and playing as well as I can.

“You get the opportunity to speak with directors on planes, pick their brains and speak to people. That is what this club is all about. You’ve got to be together and it is a concern of mine.

“I am not concerned but it is good to speak with those people and know where the club is at, the direction and optimism, as a player there are things you want to know and be a part of. I hope my opinion is sometimes taken and matters as well and it’s a good relationship. I really enjoy how things are going.”

Most supporters would have been in agreement that Butland was going to be one of the most important players for Rangers over the course of this summer transfer window.

Philippe Clement set out his stall early in the window when he admitted he was the only player not available at any price, but there have been some who have suggested that wasn’t the correct approach for the Gers to take.

The Englishman alone would have helped fund a large portion of the summer rebuild at Ibrox had he been allowed to depart and that could have been a sacrifice worth making to strengthen other areas of the squad.

However, from Butland’s comments, it seems very unlikely that will happen before the window slams shut at the end of August.

Ultimately, only time will tell whether the Light Blues have made the right call or not but it is certainly up for debate.
