Philippe Clement will be given more money by the Rangers hierarchy to spend on transfers should they qualify for the Champions League, according to Sahil Jaidka.
The Sky Sports journalist reported on 12 August that the club stand to make around 36million if they make it to Europe’s elite club competition.
Gers’ budget this summer was decided based on the Europa League and it would be an unexpected financial boost if they make it to the Champions League.
Jaidka wrote: “Rangers have set out their summer transfer budget based on qualifying for the Europa League. However, should they reach the Champions League – Clement will find himself with a lot more money to play with.
“The club have added nine players this summer with Robin Propper, Vaclav Cerny, Hamza Igamane, Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Liam Kelly and Connor Barron joining. Meanwhile, Oscar Cortes – who returned on loan with an obligation to buy next summer – and Mohamed Diomande – who made his loan move permanent – have also been signed.
“However, the manager will want to add more quality to his group and should Rangers reach the new league phase of the Champions League. The club stand to earn at least £36m, almost three times as much as the Europa League groups will offer.”
Rangers need Champions League qualification to beat Celtic to the title
Gers need Champions League qualification to beat Celtic to the title as their current squad is not good enough to compete consistently.
The financial boost from qualifying would allow Clement to strengthen the squad significantly as the Beglian could sign higher-quality players who can make a difference in the Scottish Premiership.
While bolstered by nine new signings, the squad still lacks the depth and quality needed to consistently challenge Celtic.
The Europa League is a step down from the Champions League and the financial rewards are significantly lower.
If Rangers can secure Champions League qualification, they can attract better players and invest in areas of the squad that need improvement.
Beating Celtic to the title requires a strong squad capable of performing week in and week out.
With the additional funds from Champions League qualification, Clement can build a squad that is more competitive and capable of challenging for the title.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement’s number one priority has been revealed as more transfers are eyed ahead of the 30 August transfer deadline.
