Wout Faes destroyed in front of Van Nistelrooy as Leicester lose at Brentford

Wout Faes was destroyed by a brutal verdict from David Nugent as Leicester City were thrashed at Brentford.

Ruud van Nistelrooy watched on from the stands at The GTech Community Stadium on Saturday (30th November), in the first game since being appointed as the club’s new manager, as the Foxes went down 4-1.

After going ahead early on through Facundo Buonanotte, the hosts ran in four unanswered goals on their way to an emphatic victory over the Dutchman’s new side.

Just as he had against Chelsea last weekend, Faes endured a difficult afternoon which saw former Foxes striker Nugent hammer him for his performance and his reaction.

After Yoanne Wissa found himself free in the Foxes’ box midway through the second half, bringing a save out of Mads Hermansen, the former striker said on BBC Radio Leicester (16:16): “It’s Wout Faes again. He’s just standing there with his arms in the air thinking ‘what’s going on here?’

“Do something about it, stop moaning, get on with it and do something about it, your team’s getting beat, stop moaning.”

After commentator Owynn Palmer-Atkin then suggested there had been talk in the press room at half-time about Faes not performing at the level of a Premier League defender in recent weeks, Nugent added: “No and he needs to show it, he’s playing in a struggling team this season.

“Obviously last season in the Championship winning the league it’s all fine and dandy isn’t it. But Premier League, better opposition, you’re playing against better players, you’ve got to up your game and he seems to like not have that at the minute.

“And I’m not just going to blame Wout Faes, there’s a few of the players like that.”

It is hard not to feel as though Faes’ place in the Foxes’ starting lineup is going to come under scrutiny after another performance such as this.

As has been suggested in commentary here, the centre-back is not performing at the level needed to hold his own in the Premier League at this moment in time.

Leicester though, simply cannot afford to be carrying passengers in that way when they are battling to avoid an immediate relegation back to the Championship.

With a new manager now in with the appointment of Van Nistelrooy it would be no surprise to see changes being made, and this could put Faes in the firing line.

Jannik Vestergaard could be back in contention under the new boss after an apparent rift with Steve Cooper, having come off the bench in this match, not that he exactly shone.

That ensures there is more competition for places at centre-back, offering more scope for rotation for the Dutchman.

With that in mind, Faes may now have some reason to feel concerned about keeping hold of his place in the Leicester starting lineup with the new manager unlikely to have been impressed.

In other news, Leicester approached another manager before appointing Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
