Ian Wright and Roy Keane were impressed with Jordan Pickford with the Everton goalkeeper playing a crucial role in England’s 3-0 win over Greece on Friday.
Pickford was called into action several times throughout the Nations League encounter at Wembley on Thursday (14 November), making five saves during the game.
His second-half save from Fotis Ioannidis in particular wowed Keane, while Wright was also keen to praise his crucial contribution to the Three Lions.
Speaking during ITV’s coverage of the game, Keane said: “I’ve been a big critic of Pickford but I thought tonight, particularly the save in the second half, it’s a very good save don’t get me wrong. This was a huge moment when it was 1-0. Brilliant save, all credit to him. Fantastic save. That save was a huge turning point in the game.”
Wright seconded Keane’s praise when he said: “I think he earned the luck that he got today. He made some good saves. I thought with the one where he saved it around the post, I thought he was way too far out. Anything down the left I think the guy scores but he’s made a great save.
“I’m delighted for him tonight.”
Jordan Pickford crucial for Everton run-in
Very few players at Goodison Park have showcased the level of consistency that Pickford has throughout his time at the club.
While an impending takeover could stabilise the club going forward, Pickford is a huge reason why the Toffees remain in the Premier League and his performance against Greece showcased that.
Throughout the night, his shot-stopping ability was first class and his distribution, as ever, was phenomenal.
Everton certainly lack quality in several areas of the pitch that will need to be addressed in January although the goalkeeping department is not one of them.
Any hopes of gaining momentum after the break will be down partly due to the impressive form of Pickford who has earned his credentials as England’s number one.
Everton have endured a rough start to the Premier League season but hopes will be that they can find a run of form and kickstart their campaign which has seen them pick up just two wins so far.
In other Everton news, Dwight McNeil and Armando Broja have been spotted on the Finch Farm pitches as they continue their comebacks from injury.
