Derek Ferguson has told Cyriel Dessers to “be careful” after a recent incident in Rangers’ Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv.
Philippe Clement’s side will have to settle for another season of Europa League football after they were beaten 2-0 by the Ukrainian side at Hampden Park following Jefte’s controversial red card.
As emotions bubbled over off the pitch, Dessers was spotted having a prolonged go at the groaning home crowd [Jordan Campbell, 13 August] much to the frustration of Ferguson who suggests the striker will be in for a “rough ride”.
Speaking on the Open Goal YouTube channel (15 August, 32:30) he said: “I’ll tell you what, that’s when the fans kicked in.
“That’s when the fans came in and gave them a wee bit back. By the way, just another wee thing. We praised him last week but Dessers, be careful mate.
“We get that you’re giving your all and a bit jaded and all that, but when the fans are giving it to you, that’s part of parcel of being at Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen and Hearts. That’s part of the game.
“You’ve got to accept that. When he started giving it that, I was really surprised. I tell you, you’re in for a rough ride.”
Will Cyriel Dessers exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer speculation?
Dessers does tend to be on the receiving end of more criticism than the average Rangers player, but his reaction towards the supporters at Hampden Park was disappointing to see, especially so early on in the season.
His goal kept the tie alive in the first leg, but he was once again not at his best in the second leg of the tie and while the groans from the crowd were harsh, they were already frustrated by other aspects of the game.
The Light Blues have had similar issues with the likes of Todd Cantwell and Fabio Silva over the last few months and it is just not a good look to see players and fans clashing during games.
As Ferguson suggests, that sort of reaction can tarnish reputations in Glasgow. Many fans have already been calling for the Gers to sell Dessers as he continues to be linked with a last-minute transfer and that is unlikely to change after recent developments [Soccernet, 11 August].
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have been handed a free run at Lawrence Shankland after a new transfer update at Celtic
