Maurice Ross has issued a blunt response to Kris Boyd and his claims that Rangers and Celtic should be worried about Tony Bloom’s investment in Hearts.
The Brighton & Hove Albion owner is in talks with the Scottish Premiership side over a £10m investment that would see Hearts adopt his analytical company for player identification and recruitment [Sky Sports, 18 September].
Boyd spoke about the news on Sky Sports [18 September, 10:30am] and believes the investment should have Rangers and Celtic worried.
He said: “They’ve caused problems for the big ones, so if I’m Rangers and Celtic, I’m worried about his appointment – if I’m Hearts, I’m biting your hands off.
“Rangers and Celtic should be worried. There is potential for Hearts to go and challenge Rangers and Celtic. This could be a big thing for Scottish football.”
In response to those comments, ex-Rangers player Ross posted via his personal X account [19 September]: “Zzzzz”.
Rangers and Celtic should be worried about Hearts
If there is one fundamental, albeit well-documented, factor that separates Rangers and Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, it is the club’s opposing finances.
The Gers were forced to scrounge for every penny they could earn this summer to reinvest into the side, and after five matches of the new season, the gulf in class could unfortunately not be more apparent.
Hearts are no better off in terms of finances. However, Bloom’s potential investment could be a game-changer given the success in the transfer market Brighton have enjoyed under his stewardship.
The Seagulls spent an eye-watering £194 million on player acquisitions this summer but that was only made possible by the £200m in player sales earned in the past two years. Most notably, the £110m sale of Moises Caicedo to Chelsea in 2023, who joined for £4m the year prior.
That sense of shrewdness in the transfer market is lacking at Ibrox and, while many including Ross are somewhat unbothered with the news, this is exactly the type of move Rangers should be making if the club are serious about challenging Celtic.
Add a Hearts side into the equation with the eagle eye for a bargain in Bloom and the landscape of Scottish football is about to become a lot more difficult for Rangers.
