£15m player Tottenham reportedly wanted to sign now receives straight red card on debut for new club

Tottenham enjoyed an impressive summer transfer window under Johan Lange – Director of Football at Spurs.

The north Londoners signed Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert and also welcomed January addition Lucas Bergvall to Hotspur Way.

Furthermore, Tottenham sealed a signing for January 2025 as well, with Min-hyeok Yang arriving from Gangwon FC.

There were targets Ange Postecoglou missed out on – such as Conor Gallagher, who Spurs seemed to be very keen on signing – although another target who got away has now endured a nightmarish debut…

Carlos Alcaraz sent off on Flamengo debut after Tottenham links

A story from The Sun claimed that Tottenham wanted to sign Carlos Alcaraz from Southampton to bolster the attacking midfield department this summer.

It was said that Spurs considered using Joe Rodon in a bid to sign the Argentine, although the South American eventually ended up securing a £15m move to Flamengo instead.

However, the 21-year-old got off to the worst possible start for the Brazilian giants, suffering a 2-1 defeat against rivals Corinthians on debut, while also receiving a straight red card despite only playing 45 minutes.

The Argentina U23 international received his marching orders after a wild kick from Yuri Alberto sparked chaotic scenes, with Alcaraz being dismissed after appearing to throw a punch amid the melee.

In truth, it was admirable to see the man from La Plata defend his teammates on debut, although he may regret his actions as a three-game ban now looms for his new club.

Spurs could do with more South American flair

During Sunday’s 2-1 defeat against Newcastle, Tottenham looked soft.

Alexander Isak was able to net his winner with ease, after a simple pass from Joelinton put both the Swede and Jacob Murphy in on goal, cutting Tottenham’s backline apart like a hot knife through butter.

Aside from the fiery Cristian Romero, we feel Postecoglou does not have enough passion within his side – they seem far too passive, going through the motions more often than not.

We are by no means advising Spurs players to go around punching opponents like Alcaraz, although there is no doubt that Tottenham need more fight if the 2024/25 campaign is going to be a memorable one.
