Rangers 'civil war': Keith Wyness hits out at Ibrox chiefs after Dave King latest

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers chiefs should be “supporting the manager on the pitch” instead of fighting for the top job in the media.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted “other clubs are coming up behind” the Gers amid the “civil war” at Ibrox.

Interim chair John Gilligan has stepped into the role at Rangers following the resignation of John Bennett for health reasons.

He has already clashed with major shareholder Dave King, who has revealed his interest in taking the role full-time, by urging him to cease public criticism of the way the club is being run.

He said: “Please take it below the radar. Behave like a proper shareholder. Don’t do what you’re doing. It’s a shame because he’s a great character and was a massive influence at the club at the time.”

In a new twist, manager Phillipe Clement has even been forced to speak out on the crisis, insisting: “If there’s no unity you cannot have a good club. That’s clear.”

Rangers ‘civil war’ continues as Clement speaks out, says Wyness

Wyness insisted any available funds must be spent on the football side of the club as soon as possible.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The new interim chairman, John Gilligan, has come in.

“There’s been infighting with Dave King – which is basically a civil war at this point.

“They need to completely reset and support the manager on the pitch.

“Any pennies they can get need to be spent on the football side right now – that’s where it’s needed.

“Rangers have got some issues right now. Other clubs are coming up behind them, and it’s going to be an interesting season to see how it pans out.”

In other news, Rangers could land £12million+ windfall – official documents reveal.
