Rangers midfielder Jose Cifuentes is expected to complete a medical on Monday evening (12 August) to join Aris Thessaloniki, according to Sport24.

The Greek outlet reported on Sunday (11 August) that the Gers have agreed on a one-year loan for the 25-year-old with a mandatory purchase option worth £4.3million.

It is understood that, with the player’s current contract worth over £855,000, equating to around £16,000-a-week, Rangers are expected to cover part of the wages during the loan spell.

Rangers sanction Jose Cifuentes transfer at Ibrox

While the hierarchy at Ibrox will be keen to get Cifuentes off the books, it looks as though they will need to cover part of his wages until a permanent deal is finalised next summer.

The 25-year-old showed such promise before the Gers signed him from LAFC for £1.2million last summer [Sky Sports], but his spell in Scotland has been far from ideal, to say the least.

Cifuentes looked to be an exciting new addition while Michael Beale was still in charge, but since Philippe Clement was appointed, the Ecuadorian has shown nothing to warrant a chance in the squad.

He has made just 20 appearances for the Light Blues since, spending much of last season on loan at Cruizero in Brazil, though he still failed to impress at a much lower level.

There will certainly be no tears shed while Cifuentes finally departs Ibrox, and many fans have been taken aback by the price tag that Rangers are reportedly going to earn from him.

Although the club will not receive those funds for another season, it is a very clever piece of business from John Bennett, who has taken over a transfer role following James Bisgrove’s exit earlier this summer.

With a few weeks of the transfer window still remaining, this is unlikely to be the last exit at Ibrox as Clement continues to trim the fat in the squad.

In other Rangers news, the Gers desperately need one new transfer before August 30 deadline.
