Expert urges Tottenham teen to snub loan amid Birmingham City speculation

John Wenham has advised Jamie Donley to wait until January to consider a loan move away from Tottenham.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the 19-year-old is likely to receive plenty of first-team minutes under Ange Postecoglou.

As reported by The Sun’s Tom Barclay via X (2 August), most of the Championship and EFL League One are interested in signing Donley on loan.

Chris Davies, previously of Tottenham, is very keen to bring Donley to Birmingham City.

But Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think a temporary move away from North London would be the right decision for Donley at this point.

“Originally I wanted Donley to go out on loan,” Wenham said.

“However, I have changed my mind on that. I think he has played some of the most pre-season minutes, which is a massive vote of confidence from the coaching staff toward him.

“Therefore, I think he’d be better suited hanging around the first-team squad, at least until January. Then he can see where he stands and reassess.

“He has made so much progress and sometimes the better loans are available in January anyway. If he sticks around, I imagine he will play lots of first-team minutes.”

Donley has been offered plenty of opportunities to shine in pre-season.

He has been doing most of his work at left-back, which is far from his usual position. However, that showcase of versatility is likely to have caught the eye of Postecoglou.

With UEFA Europa League football on the agenda, there might be plenty of opportunities for Donley to get involved.

Therefore, a loan move is perhaps not what is best for the player’s development as of now. However, if Postecoglou doesn’t plan to include the youngster, that must be communicated to Donley.
