Malcolm Offord has emerged as the “leading contender” to become the new chairman of Rangers, according to The Scottish Sun.
The newspaper reported via their website on 23 November that the 60-year-old is ready to replace John Bennett as the Light Blues’ permanent chief.
Furthermore, Offord is already involved in talks over the hiring of a new CEO – another major role that has remained vacant since James Bisgrove’s exit.
Malcolm Offord ready to become Rangers chairman
Without a permanent chairman and CEO in place, there has been a cloud of uncertainty over Ibrox in recent months.
Although John Gilligan returned to the club as an interim chairman after Bennett had to step down from his role due to health concerns, there is not much that can be expected from a temporary fix.
Therefore, news that Offord could be set to become the Gers’ new permanent chairman is very much welcome.
Chris Jack revealed on 13 November that the Glasgow giants hoped to have a new chairman in place in time for their annual meeting on 5 December and that could very well be the case.
Fans will also be glad to hear that Offord is already involved in behind-the-scene decisions, although his appointment is yet to be announced. A CEO appointment is mooted to be “weeks away”.
It is worth noting that the Greenock-born businessman is a member of the House of Lords and holds the title of Lord Offord of Garvel.
His prowess in politics and business would make him an interesting appointment by Rangers and it now remains to be seen how he will fare if it is made official.
In other Rangers news, a Nils Koppen uncertainty has been shared at Ibrox after new behind-the-scenes developments.
