7-figure Everton victory set to bite all 20 PL clubs in 'hugely costly' Man City claim - report

Everton triumphing in their appeal against full payment the Premier League’s legal costs from their PSR dispute could end up coming back to bite every club in the division, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Dave Powell wrote for the outlet’s website on 8 September that the Toffees’ “small victory” in restricting the outlay to £1.7million instead of the “eye-watering” £4.9m the league wanted may have a set a precedent for the upcoming case against Manchester City and their 100-plus charges.

As such the Everton appeal success is “likely to have expensive ramifications for the Premier League at the worst possible time” when City have employed Lord Pannick as part of an expensive representation for what is set to be “hugely costly” legal battle.

And since the Toffees avoided paying the full costs from a case they ultimately lost it means the City dispute will cost the league in a big way whoever wins.

Powell points out that may sound like “one in the eye” for the Premier League right now but it will ultimately still cost Everton as part of the collective, as all governance costs are born by the 20 members so the money will come out of the cash from broadcast rights and commercial deals that is shared between the clubs.

Everton PSR costs win to come back to bite at Goodison Park

The Toffees don’t seem to be able to get any relief without there being a sting in the tail somewhere, so while it will have come as a boost to avoid an extra £3.2m cost now it will likely be the opposite further down the line.

With the cash at Goodison Park tipped to start running out by sometime next month without significant advances on a takeover [Kieran Maguire, 31 July] it is probably a good thing that the positive comes in the short term.

The hope will be that John Textor or another buyer is in charge and the future finances have been mapped out more clearly by the time the bill from the City case arrives and is deducted from all 20 clubs’ share of the Premier League cash.

Given how long it has taken for a hearing to even come to pass for the complicated charges levelled against the reigning Champions, all of which they deny, it is likely to be some way into the future before that happens.

Everton Farhad Moshiri
Everton finances have become a major issue under the reign of Farhad Moshiri.

Dan Friedkin has been predicted by some close to the takeover process as likely to return to the frame [Paul Brown, 29 August] so it may even be him who is in charge by then.

In the mean time Sean Dyche needs to turn the team’s form around to ensure Everton are still in the top flight for future developments to affect them.

The manager is facing calls to go and intermediaries are now at work sounding out potential replacements after his miserable start to the season [TBR Football, 5 September], with another relegation battle looking likely.

In other Everton news, a manager from the Saudi Pro League has made a pitch for Dyche’s job at Goodison Park.
