Wolves forward Matheus Cunha has taken to social media to send a message to Mario Lemina and Nelson Semedo after captaining the side for the first time.
New manager Vitor Pereira secured an impressive 3-0 Premier League victory over fellow strugglers Leicester on Sunday (December 22) in his first game at the helm.
Goncalo Guedes opened the scoring for the visitors in the 19th minute with an acrobatic finish before Rodrigo Gomes doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark.
Cunha, 25, then rounded off the scoring just ahead of the break, earning a much-needed win in Wolves’ ultimate mission of securing Premier League safety.
The striker has been a rare bright spark in Wolves’ dismal start to the season, starting 16 of his 18 games across all competitions, scoring nine goals, and providing three assists in 1447 minutes of action.
Matheus Cunha proud to captain Wolves in much-needed win over Leicester
Lemina was stripped of the captaincy by former manager Gary O’Neil following an on-field clash with Jarrod Bowen and one of his own coaches after their 2-1 defeat to West Ham.
Right-back Semedo was then made the new captain but handed the armband to Cunha when he was substituted in the 89th minute against Leicester.
Cunha took to Instagram to commemorate the occasion, even though it was a fleeting moment, saying: “First time captain of this team. It’s a pleasure to learn from you,” tagging Semedo and Lemina.
Wolves are now just two points off safety, sitting in 18th after their impressive win over 17th-placed Leicester.
Pereira’s side will host Ruben Amorim’s struggling Man United on Boxing Day (December 26) in a game that could go either way.
