Chris Beesley has described the thought of Jarrad Branthwaite swapping Everton for Liverpool as an “abomination” to Toffees fans.
In his article in the Liverpool Echo [3 October], one of the site’s senior Blues reporters claimed it would be “every Evertonian’s dream” for Branthwaite – dubbed the “Carlisle Kaiser” to be turning out for the club in their first match at the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium.
For this to be achievable, Branthwaite must stay on the blue half of the city through another two transfer windows, and Liverpool are reported to be considering hijacking Manchester United’s established interest [Daily Mail, 1 October].
Reacting to that article in the Mail, Beesley wrote: “It’s surely every Evertonian’s dream to have star man Jarrad Branthwaite still turning out in a royal blue jersey when they play their first game at their new stadium next year.
“But even if ‘The Carlisle Kaiser’ has been sold by then, it would be an abomination in the eyes of many current Goodison Park patrons to think of him defecting across Stanley Park.”
Everton cannot let Liverpool snatch Jarrad Branthwaite
There is a reason history serves hardly any established players representing both sides of Stanley Park for a sustained period, and that is the idea that for most players, it appears inconceivable.
This is without considering the possibility of a direct transfer between the two, and then on top of that the fact Branthwaite is Everton’s most prized asset and most crucial player over the past year.
His injury woes rocked Sean Dyche’s side, and his return last weekend immediately helped the club to a maiden Premier League win.
The Toffees affirmed their stance that he would not be for sale at any sort of cut-price deal, successfully fending off several bids from Man United – whose poor defensive showings this season only increase the likelihood they will sniff around again in January.
Next summer’s window will be the real testing point if Liverpool are serious about Branthwaite – who by that point will have two remaining years on his current contract, a precarious position.
In other Everton news, an injured member of the squad will miss his international fixtures.
