Robin Propper has left Stephen Thompson and Liam McLeod baffled with an incident in Rangers’ clash with Olympiacos.
Philippe Clement’s side drew 1-1 with the Greek giants on Thursday (7 November) with Ayoub El Kaabi’s second-half goal cancelled out by Cyriel Dessers to keep the Gers’ hopes of qualifying for the Europa League knockout stages alive.
Although the Light Blues backline managed to keep the home side at arm’s length for much of the game, BBC Sportsound commentators Thompson and McLeod were confused when Propper stopped defending in the first half to appeal for an office.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound on Thursday (7 November, 18:02) McLeod said: “Ayoub El Kaabi was in behind Propper and Propper was obviously convinced he was offside.
“But he stopped and started walking with his arm in the air if he’d have been marginally on…”
Thompson replied: “It’s a risk that. You’re always told to play to the whistle.”
hit back saying: “Why don’t they then? You see it all the time, it doesn’t matter what game you’re watching.”
What has happened to Rangers man Robin Propper at Ibrox?
It’s safe to say that Propper has had a less than convincing start to life at Ibrox, having made the move to Glasgow during the summer transfer window.
The Dutchman arrived in Scotland with plenty of promise, but so far has struggled to deal with the pace of Premiership football. Although he has occasionally faired better in the Europa League, he still has the odd shaky moment.
Why he felt the need to halt his defensive run as he appealed for an offside against El Kaabi is unclear. Fortunately, the linesman agreed that the Olympiacos forward had drifted into an offside position and was quick to raise his flag.
Hopefully, that moment was a shot across the bows of the Gers defender however to remind him that he cannot afford to take his foot off of the gas, especially in those marginal incidents when anything can happen.
Rangers fans need to see some more consistent performances from the 31-year-old if they are to believe he should be John Souttar’s long-term partner at Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, Cerny has been told that he looks like a “little boy” when he plays in the Scottish Premiership
