Gary Keown has given a scathing latest assessment of the Rangers hierarchy, accusing them of treating fans like “absolute mugs”.
Keown – speaking in his column in the MailOnline [26 October] – has cited the outcome of the Fan Advisory Board meeting John Gilligan as making for “painful reading”.
The Light Blues host St Mirren at 3pm on Sunday afternoon [27 October] and must keep pace after losing vital ground on Celtic and Aberdeen last week.
Keown said: “The recent meeting of the Rangers Fan Advisory Board with interim chairman John Gilligan, the minutes of which were released midweek, must mark a fork in the road in the way the Ibrox club relate to their support. It must spell an end to the practice of treating them like absolute mugs, keeping them in the dark and even blaming them for failings further up the chain while coming up with all sorts of ways to empty their bank accounts.
“And it really ought to have anyone with an interest in the trouble-torn Govan outfit — whether whisky tycoon and potential investor Billy Walker or season-book holder in the East Enclosure — asking serious questions over what those on the board have been up to all these years, and whether they are fit to continue.
“Those minutes made for painful reading. They just added to the ever-increasing sense that the left hand has had no idea what the right hand’s been doing inside Rangers for quite some time. And they really don’t inspire much confidence.”
Rangers failing to inspire supporters
At present, Rangers are a public relations nightmare towards a fanbase deserving of far more than they are served up.
Off the pitch, crucial boardroom appointments are still yet to have been confirmed, fans appear to be treated with contempt, and that’s even aside from the Hampden Park debacle.
Supporters made their feelings particularly known during last week’s visit to Kilmarnock [20 October], which they inexplicably lost late on, bringing matters onto the pitch. The midweek thrashing of FCSB has done little to settle the bigger picture, either.
Celtic and Aberdeen’s draw the previous day to the Kilmarnock game had left the door ajar, and Philippe Clement’s men slammed it shut on themselves.
The Dons secured a late win of their own on Saturday [26 October] over Dundee United to stretch themselves nine points clear of the Gers, who visit Pittodrie in a crucial clash on 30 October.
In other Rangers news, Dan Plumley makes an intriguing admission on whether the club could afford to replace their manager.
