Hamza Igamane’s move to Rangers during the transfer window has left Derek Ferguson completely baffled by the decision.

The Moroccan striker finally made his debut off the bench in the 3-0 defeat at Celtic on 1 September, having not even made a squad prior to the derby, and only joining team training weeks after his 5 July arrival.

The 21-year-old is believed to have cost as much as £2.1million [Scottish Sun, 22 June] during a summer where the club were able to spend money on precious few signings, and they were forced to deny rumours of an injury suffered behind the scenes [4 Lads Had A Dream, 30 July].

So Ferguson can’t understand why the club felt he was a priority when the squad was in major need of immediate strengthening.

“It’s a strange one for me because we knew money was tight,” he said, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News.

“So when you go and spend a few bob on a young prospect who’s injured, who’s going to take a couple of months to get fit, I thought it was absolutely bizarre.

“Because it’s about the here and the now, getting players that are going to be ready to try and challenge for the title against Celtic.

“I get that there’s been an issue over the last five or six years where we haven’t been looking at that market of bringing in young players that we can make better and maybe sell them on.

“But I just don’t think this was the right time.”

Philippe Clement
Rangers manager Philippe Clement was only able to sign one striker during the transfer window.

Philippe Clement replaced Sam Lammers with Hamza Igamane at Rangers

Igamane could prove to be an excellent signing in the long run, and if he does then perhaps the gamble this summer will have been worth it.

Arguably last season a proven goal scorer would have got Philippe Clement’s side over the line as Scottish Premiership champions, amid extensive links to Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland [Ally McCoist, 21 June].

Few would argue following this summer that the squad is one forward away from success so the campaign is in danger of being written off, and it may have been now or never to sign Igamane.

But if Clement and the hierarchy had any designs on being competitive this term then spending a decent amount of the money they did have on a player for the future was taking a major risk.

In other Rangers news, another late signing was keen to join the club before their move collapsed on Deadline Day.
