Wenham backs 'Talented' Tottenham loanee to succeed despite what happened on Saturday

John Wenham is still hopeful that Tottenham forward Dane Scarlett can prove his quality while on loan with Oxford United.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the 20-year-old still has a lot to prove.

Scarlett has played just one minute of football since moving to the Kassam Stadium on loan. The striker was an unused substitute for the second week running as Oxford United defeated Preston North End 3-1 in the Championship on Saturday (31 August).

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – hopes the forward gets some more minutes as the season progresses.

“I’m still hopeful that Scarlett can establish himself on loan with Oxford United,” Wenham said.

“Hopefully he gets some solid Championship minutes under his belt. I’ve always felt with Scarlett that he just needs one loan spell to go his way.

“There is a very talented player in there, and people are kind of forgetting that. Of all the loans, I hope this one goes the best, for his own confidence.”

It has been a tough few years for Scarlett.

The Tottenham academy graduate burst onto the scene at an early age in North London but has since struggled to live up to his potential.

He has had a couple of difficult loan spells now, and some supporters might be starting to lose faith in the player.

However, it is worth fans remembering that a certain Harry Kane followed a similar path at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and everybody knows how that turned out.

Therefore, considering Scarlett is still only 20 years old, fans need to stand by him.
