'Absolutely Unacceptable - Pundit slams Rangers footage of what happened after Celtic defeat

James Tavernier being abused by a fan after Rangers lost at Celtic has been slammed as “totally wrong” by Tam McManus.

The former Hibs striker reacted via X on 1 September after a video clip emerged of the Light Blues captain being shouted at as he left Ibrox with his teammates, following the 3-0 loss across the city at Parkhead.

Goals from Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor condemned Philippe Clement’s to another lost Old Firm derby and a five-point gap to the Hoops already, and the reaction of one supporter was to direct his fury at Tavernier directly.

McManus wrote: “This is totally wrong. Absolutely unacceptable to abuse people like this.”

The strength of feeling is something that will likely be familiar for thousands of Gers supporters after another humbling derby defeat.

But it is true that publicly abusing players is not acceptable, and is also unlikely to have a positive outcome for anyone involved.

Tavernier was widely expected to leave Rangers during the transfer window and was in negotiations over a move to Trabzonspor [Sky Sports, 24 July].

The Turkish side were thought to have come back in with an improved offer after their first was rejected [Rangers Review, 23 July] but the deal ultimately never happened, and it is looking like it may have been better if it had done.

His defensive deficiencies are nothing new but they have yet to be outweighed by the attacking output he usually produces, and as the captain of another struggling side he is a lightning rod for criticism.

At the same time he is not to blame for the way money has been wasted at the club in recent years and is far from the only player who is performing below standard.

The situation has already turned ugly in a campaign that may prove to be a write-off sooner rather than later, and fans may be forced to grin and bear it over the coming months after the expected summer overhaul only got partially completed.
