Rangers have no chance of doubling their money by selling Robin Proper back to the Eredivisie, says David Edgar.
The Heart & Hand host responded to a question via X on 28 October to indicate that the defender’s wages at Ibrox would not be prohibitive to a move back to the Dutch top flight.
He had already suggested that Propper, 31, could leave on a January loan in the same way Sam Lammers did last year before making a permanent return to the Netherlands on a deal that could reach £4million [Sky Sports, 26 July] and net the club a profit.
But while the centre-back’s Gers contract isn’t expected to be a hurdle to moving him on again after his struggles to adapt to Philippe Clement’s side, the suggestion that Rangers could profit from the equation was dismissed.
Edgar wrote: “Nah [wages aren’t high] but we absolutely won’t double [our money] on a 31yo who has flopped.”
Rangers defender fails to upgrade on Connor Goldson
The Light Blues managed to snatch a very welcome conclusion from the disastrous Lammers signing, but not without a struggle.
Despite proving completely unsuitable at Ibrox he somehow proved to be one of the top earners, so even though his unexpected revival on loan at FC Utrecht generated a market for him that would have been as good as dead otherwise he was priced out of moves thanks to not wanting to take a huge pay cut.
Clement’s well-publicised drive to bring down the wage bill should save the club from similar issues going forward, but the Belgian still appears to have fallen into the trap of signing another struggling Dutchman.
Propper’s difficulties in settling in the Rangers line up culminated in a horror-show hour in the 2-1 victory over St Mirren on 27 October.
As the de facto replacement for long-time vice-captain Connor Goldson the ex-FC Twente captain has not proven to be the authoritative senior presence he needed to be.
If he doesn’t find his feet soon it would surely be in his and the club’s best interests to investigate a quick turnaround in the hopes of finding willing takers back in the Eredivisie as with Lammers, otherwise he could face spending multiple unsatisfying seasons taking up space at Ibrox in the style of Ben Davies.
In other Rangers news, David Tanner couldn’t believe what Gers fans were doing outside Ibrox that barely ever happens.
