Everton are not thought to have actually made a transfer offer for Vitor Roque, according to Alan Myers.
The Sky Sports journalist responded to a questions via X on 13 August to pour cold water on the suggestion that a bid had gone in at Barcelona for the Brazilian forward.
Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany had reported earlier on 13 August that an offer totalling €28million [£23.9m] had been immediately rejected at the Camp Nou, as they are holding out for as much as €35m [£29.9m].
Roque, 19, only arrived in La Liga last summer with Barcelona putting a buy-out clause worth €500m [£427m] on him, but it appears he isn’t headed to Goodison Park.
Asked if there was any truth in the bid report Myers said: “Don’t think so.
Everton eye striker help as Armando Broja approached at Chelsea
Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell need to have their eye on the striker market when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s contract situation means he could leave at any time.
There are currently no takers for the Toffees number nine since an approach from Newcastle earlier this summer but Everton will be forced to consider offers before the deadline as he isn’t signing an extension [i News, 12 August].
Beto is also wanted by Atalanta after injury to Gianluca Scamacca [Calcio Mercato, 7 August] and Youssef Chermiti is out recovering from surgery after an impressive preseason.
So the club will have to have a contingency plan ready to go in case the situation at Goodison Park changes.
A recent enquiry has been made at Chelsea for Armando Broja who wants to join the Toffees, but that is said to only be possible if Calvert-Lewin leaves and will only be on loan as budget concerns are expected to prevent any further permanent deals this summer.
So while it is difficult to entirely rule anything out during a transfer window it would be a major surprise if Everton had suddenly come up with the cash for a new £20m-plus bid, much as they might be interested in Roque.
His two goals in 16 brief appearances for Barca last term clearly haven’t resulted in the situation that was envisaged a year ago if he is available already.
Thelwell came up with deals for Beto and Chermiti last summer which weren’t required to be paid until this year [The Esk, 31 May] so it is possible he has floated something similar here, but it would be a major turn up if something like that was successful when there are well-known financial pressures at the Camp Nou as well.
In other Everton news, an exit update has emerged on a pair of unwanted Goodison players after the club put them up for transfer.
