Alan Shearer disagrees with Daniel Levy stance after Tottenham development this week

Alan Shearer feels Daniel Levy would rather see Tottenham finish in the Premier League’s top four than win the EFL Cup – a stance he disagrees with.

Spurs caused an upset over Manchester City at home on Wednesday (30 October), beating them 2-1 and qualifying for the quarter-finals of the competition.

While a clash with Manchester United awaits Ange Postecoglou and Co., Shearer has said they can go all the way and win the trophy.

The pundit added that Levy would still prefer a top-four finish in the Premier League, but he himself would prefer to see Spurs win silverware, which he thinks is the case with Postecoglou and his players too.

“Spurs can go all the way in League Cup after City victory”, Shearer wrote in his Betfair column (2 November).

“Tottenham knocked out Man City in the League Cup on Wednesday and their prize for doing so is Man United at home, so it’s a tough draw for them, but it was a big win.

“Whatever side Man City put out, they’re going to be competitive, even though if they had to choose a competition to go out of, it would probably be the League Cup.

“It was a big result for Ange Postecoglou, but they sustained a couple of injuries, with Micky Van de Ven having to go off with a hamstring injury which means he’ll likely be out for a period.

“That’s not good news for Spurs because we know what he brings to the team.

“If you asked the chairman – Daniel Levy – he would say he’d prefer to get into the top four, but If you asked me, the players and Ange Postecoglou, they’d want to win a trophy.”

Ange Postecoglou would agree with Alan Shearer’s Tottenham silverware stance

Postecoglou’s statement about always delivering a trophy in his second season in a job last month (Sky Sports, 17 September) garnered a lot of media attention.

With Tottenham progressing into the last eight of the EFL Cup, the Greek-Australian tactician has a real chance of keeping his word.

Finishing in the Premier League’s top four is still a priority for Spurs, but ending the club’s trophy drought would also be a huge achievement for Postecoglou.

The North London club are one of only three teams to have won each of their three UEFA Europa League games so far, so they are very much active in Europe as well.

That, though, does not mean Postecoglou can take his eyes off the Premier League, where his side are placed ninth with four wins after nine games.

In fact, Scott McDonald believes beating Manchester City and progressing in the EFL Cup might have saved the manager’s job at Tottenham.

This Spurs side remain very inconsistent, but if they can win three more games in the EFL Cup then they will make a lot of people very happy indeed.

In other Tottenham news, Chris Sutton has tipped Spurs to dominate in this area against Aston Villa on Sunday, 3 November.
