Chris Sutton believes that Rangers fans deserve better than to see Philippe Clement making excuses after games.

Gers find themselves nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen and the Belgian is facing the heat at Ibrox after the recent 2-1 loss to the Dons.

The former Celtic striker has compared him to Pedro Caixinha and Michael Beale – two former managers not overly popular with the Ibrox faithful.

Sutton told the Daily Record: “There’s been so much wasted though – and not a single bit of progress. They deserve better – as do Rangers fans. You look at where they were a year ago. There was an initial bounce under Clement but they ran out of steam and now?

“They have the Belgian Beale in charge. I can’t believe quite how off the rails the manager has gone. After his first few months there were positive signs. He secured a trophy and spoke a lot of sense. After the nonsense of Michael Beale, they looked to have a sensible, serious operator in charge.

“They now have a Belgian waffler who is spouting the kind of gibberish that Pedro Caixinha came out with. The warning signs were there last year with his ‘moral victory’ against Celtic and it’s got worse and worse.”

Rangers fans have grown sick of Philippe Clement’s excuses

If Gers were leading the league with a clear identity and dominating performances, Clement’s post-game excuses might be received with a shrug and even support, as fans often give leeway to managers who deliver results.

However, in the current scenario where Rangers trail behind and struggle for form, the Belgian’s excuses are perceived not as genuine explanations but as attempts to cover his managerial shortcomings.

This situation exacerbates fan discontent because it highlights a disconnect between the club’s ambitions and the reality on the pitch.

Fans tolerate, or even humour, managerial quirks when they’re coupled with success but the Belgian’s constant justifications, in light of poor results, are seen as hollow and reflective of deeper tactical or motivational issues within the team.

This mismatch between expectation and performance, coupled with excuses, fuels the fanbase’s frustration, indicating a broader dissatisfaction with Clement’s leadership and not many are unlikely to be upset if he does get sacked.

In other Rangers news, a league winning manager is now the favourite to take over the reins from Philippe Clement.
