Ally McCoist has hit back at Martin O’Neill after his criticism of the current Rangers squad.

The former Celtic manager shared his verdict live on talkSPORT on 21 October after the 1-0 defeat against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, saying it was the worst set of players he has seen at Ibrox in years.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (22 October, 08:53am) following the criticism, McCoist admitted it was “agony” to hear what was being said about his dearest Rangers.

“Well that’s up for debate, the fact of the matter is they obviously went down to the second and third division but with everything else he says, he’s right,” he said.

“It’s agony to hear but he’s right with what he says, there’s a massive gulf between the teams at this time and he’s also right with saying Rangers are capable of going anywhere and getting a result but to do it consistently on a regular basis.

“We’re miles off it and I don’t think there’s going to be an immediate quick fix.”

Rangers need to get out of the shadows of Celtic

This season was meant to be different with Philippe Clement having more than enough time to get his ideas across, but that certainly hasn’t happened.

Aberdeen have taken over the reins, instead, with both themselves and Celtic currently six points ahead of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership table.

There have been moments this season which have oozed class such as the 2-0 victory over Malmo but more often than not, these occasional good performances have been overshadowed by their losses.

Any time a game has had some sort of pressure on it this season, Clement’s men have not done anything besides crumble.

Their biggest defeats this term have come at the hands of Celtic domestically and Lyon in the Europa League, on the grandest stages.

These games not only show their inability to fight for the win when pressure is high but it also outlines their lack of quality to compete with the tougher teams they’re likely to face.

Things can still change of course as we’re only eight games into the domestic season but if Clement doesn’t manage to buck his ideas up soon, the Belgian’s future could be in peril.
