Pundit View: Jimmy Thelin has made a 'Mockery' of Philippe Clement statement at Rangers

Andy Halliday has suggested Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin has made a mockery of a recent statement from Philippe Clement at Rangers.

The Light Blues missed the chance to close the gap to both Celtic and the Dons at the top of the table as they were beaten 1-0 by Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday (21 October).

Earlier in the campaign, Clement had suggested fans would see the best of his Gers side in October and Clyde 1 pundit Halliday believes Thelin has shown that the Light Blues manager is underperforming at Ibrox.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (21 October, 23:00) he said: “Philippe Clement stated just a few weeks ago that he needs time.

“He’s obviously got new players and he’s integrating a new squad and you’ll probably start to see the best of his squad in October. I mean October, they lost 4-1 to Lyon, it was an unconvincing win over St Johnstone and now a 1-0 defeat to Killie.

“Before that, they won 1-0 at home to Hibs where Hibs missed a penalty and deserved a draw out of the game so I don’t think they have got better. I actually don’t think they’ve improved either since his last statement when he made that statement.

“So I do think he has a lot of the blame and I think Jimmy Thelin at Aberdeen is making a mockery of that statement altogether because you can see what you can do with a new group of players, a pre-season and how much you can implement a style with new players.

“That’s why they’ve went on the record they’ve went on.”

Most Gers fans thought it could take time for Clement’s new-look side to settle into life at Ibrox, but it is inexcusable that this team still looked so poor when the transfer window closed almost two months ago.

Even stars like Nedim Bajrami have been Rangers players for several weeks now. The excuse that players are still settling in and adapting to Clement’s methods won’t wash with fans anymore.

As Halliday suggests, Thelin’s success at Aberdeen has made the Gers’ start look even worse. The new Dons manager has only had a matter of months with this current crop of players and has them looking like genuine title challengers.

Clement needs to start winning games and he needs to do it quickly. Last season it was only Brenden Rodgers who was making him look bad as his Celtic team lifted the title, whereas this year, Aberdeen and Thelin look well up for the fight.

Hopefully, things will improve starting on Thursday night in the Europa League.
