Troy Deeney believes Everton must secure Jarrad Branthwaite to a new contract to become a “serious” club moving forward.
The 22-year-old defender has been a key figure at Goodison Park under Sean Dyche, which has also come hand-in-hand with a lot of transfer speculation, especially from Manchester United [The Athletic].
While he has suffered from injury setbacks during the 2024/25 campaign so far, Deeney has still issued The Friedkin Group a word of advice when it comes to keeping the star at Goodison Park.
Speaking live via talkSPORT [27 December, 12:41pm], Matterface said: “How good is Jarrad Branthwaite? They’ve conceded twice in the period in which he’s been back.
Deeney: “With Tarkowski, they balance themselves out really well, and having that natural left-footer is huge. If they want to be serious, they’ll have to put him under a big contract and make him the main man moving forward.”
Jarrad Branthwaite to remain at Everton despite recent transfer speculation?
Branthwaite and James Tarkowski built an incredible partnership last season, helping keep the Toffees afloat in the Premier League despite two separate points deductions.
This season has been much tougher for Dyche and his players, with only three points separating them from the relegation zone right now, but Branthwaite looks fit and ready to fight.
He only has eight league starts to his name this season, mainly thanks to surgery during the summer which came with further setbacks, but he has now started all six of their last games.
Keeping the central defender during the summer, or even during the January transfer window, will be an extremely difficult task, but with TFG now in charge, financial issues no longer seem to be such a burden.
Therefore, selling Branthwaite will not be a need ahead of the upcoming transfer windows, and the Merseyside club should be able to keep him on the books if he wants to stay.
