'This Is Their Best Chance' - Keith Wyness drops verdict on Southampton sacking Martin

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has urged Southampton chiefs to give Russell Martin more time to turn things around in the Premier League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed two wins in the coming games could transform the mood within the Saints dressing room and fanbase.

Football Insider revealed last week (8 October) that Southampton’s hierarchy have met to discuss Martin’s future at the club.

The south coast club, who face Leicester, Man City and Everton in their next three top-flight games, are currently joint-bottom of the Premier League with just one point from a possible 21 to start the 2024-25 campaign.

Martin led Southampton to promotion via the play-offs last term and was rewarded with a new contract running until June 2027.

Southampton told to ‘stick with’ Martin despite awful start

Wyness implored Saints chiefs to stick with the 38-year-old unless the dressing room is “fractured”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I hope they stick with him.

“Unless the dressing room is fractured, I think stability is their best chance of turning things around.

“He did get them playing very well last year and he deserves this chance.

“The fans are starting to get frustrated with the way Southampton are playing, but I think stability is the way to solve this problem.

“It’s key in football unless problems become just too much.

“If he gets two wins, then the problems will disappear. The dressing room will be united and the fans will be happy.

“The manner of a loss will also be important, especially against City. Is it a thumping, is it not?

“I’m appealing to the owners to give Martin more time and just watch closely over the coming games.”
