Newcastle United will find it difficult to do transfer business with Saudi Pro League sides this summer under new toughened associated party rules.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle may have to reduce asking prices by £5-£10million to comply with the new regulations.

The Premier League introduced tougher associated party transaction rules in February 2024 which make it more difficult for top-flight clubs to strike sponsorship or transfer deals with sister clubs or associated companies.

Reigning champions Manchester City have taken legal action against the latest iteration of APT rules, claiming they are “unlawful”.

Newcastle have previously sold Allan Saint-Maximin to PiF-owned Al Alhi for a fee of around £23million, but Borson explained that transfer deals to Saudi clubs may now be much more difficult for the Tyneside club.

Newcastle United Saudi deals impacted by APT rules

Newcastle would like to do business with Saudi, but of course we go back to the associated party transaction rules,” Borson told Football Insider.

There’s a new set of rules since February and people forget that the rules City are challenging in this case also apply to transfers.

So there’s a whole appendix in the Premier League rules now that wasn’t there for previous transfer windows.

Almiron is the player that has been mentioned a lot and there’s obviously a level at which you’re going to be able to get a player sold to Saudi Arabia without any fuss.

“But as soon as they start to try and squeeze in an extra £5-10 million here or there, they are going to have restrictions placed on them by the Premier League.
