Nico Raskin was the only bright spark in a “laboured” Rangers win against St Mirren, Andy Halliday has said.

Speaking on the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (28 October), Halliday singled out Raskin for praise after the Gers’ 2-1 victory at Ibrox, but was disappointed by the overall showing from Philippe Clement’s side.

Raskin and Connor Barron were dominant in the Light Blues’ 4-0 win over FCSB three days prior, and the Belgian followed it up against the Saints to continue his first-team resurgence.

Halliday said: “Against FCSB, I thought they were excellent, and then you’re hoping that kickstarts a wee mini-run, where you put a run of good performances together.

“I thought they followed that up with a very, very similar (performance) to what the Kilmarnock game was – really slow, really laboured.

“Rangers’ best player was Nico Raskin, which I do think is a plus. It’s a player who showed a lot of promise when he first came in the door and kind of lost his way a little bit.”

Nico Raskin return just what Philippe Clement needed at Rangers

Fast approaching two full seasons at Ibrox having been signed by the Gers in January 2023, Raskin is yet to have a campaign which hasn’t been hampered by persistent injury troubles.

The new season has been no different for the Belgian, who picked up a knock in pre-season which ruled him out for the opening weeks and has limited Raskin to just nine appearances so far.

However, fleeting substitute cameos have given way to the 23-year-old becoming a regular starter once again, forming a partnership with Barron which has allowed the Light Blues to rediscover their form.

Clement’s overhaul of the existing squad at Ibrox over the summer didn’t cover all bases in a single transfer window, with the number six role in deep-lying midfield one area in which Gers are lacking.

But Raskin’s return to the fold, and the consistent minutes and performances he’s pulled off, have shown that for the time being at least, the Belgian and Barron could be the answer in Clement’s double-pivot.

In other Rangers news, one Ibrox youngster is set to make only his third Gers start in their must-win match against Aberdeen.
