Ange Postecoglou explains exactly why he refuses to change his style of play at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a shock defeat just before the international break as they surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton.

The defeat means Spurs have now made their worst start to a Premier League campaign in 16 years with the team sitting ninth in the table and having taken just 10 points from their first seven matches.

After the defeat on the south coast, there have been calls for Ange Postecoglou to show a bit more pragmatism to his style of play as his side managed to lose their firm grip on the game.

But the Australian manager is adamant that he will not change the way he sets his team up and he has explained the exact reason why he will not make alterations.

Ange Postecoglou on being more defensive at Tottenham

Postecoglou has revealed that he will not listen to the calls for him to show a more pragmatic tactical configuration at Tottenham.

The 59-year-old says he understands the criticism telling him to change his approach, however, owing to his strong belief in his methods and where they have got him today, he will not change.

Postecoglou told Optus Sport: “From my perspective, it’s about what everyone wants me to do is what everyone else does. Now, I’m just not going to do that because there’s a reason I’m here today, it’s not because I’ve done what everyone else does.

“So I think everyone has their own unique journey to get to somewhere, I didn’t get here by doing what everyone else is doing.

“So I get the people who say ‘be more pragmatic’ like everyone else – But I don’t want to be like everyone else. What others see as stubbornness or me being dogmatic, I just see it as real belief in what I’m doing.”

How could Postecoglou line-up Tottenham vs West Ham?

Heung-min Son, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert are all set to return to Tottenham training this week in a massive boost ahead of West Ham.

Although of the returning trio, only Son is expected to start against the Hammers replacing Timo Werner who has started the last three matches.

The London derby is likely to come too soon for Richarlison and Odobert who could both instead return in the Europa League against AZ Alkmaar.

Tottenham’s predicted line-up vs West Ham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Maddison, Kulusevski; Johnson, Son, Solanke.
