Arne Slot has been criticised by Keith Hackett for entering the referee’s room during half-time in his Liverpool side’s 3-3 draw with Newcastle.
The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the Reds boss should receive a reminder from the Premier League about his conduct.
It was a dramatic match at St James’ Park on Wednesday night (4 December), with controversy on the pitch as well over the timing the final whistle.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe though was left unhappy after his Liverpool counterpart Slot entered the official’s room at half-time in the match, putting him in contact with referee Andy Madley.
Hackett has now stated that he believes the Magpies boss has every right to be unhappy with the Dutchman for taking such as action at the time.
Arne Slot slated for what he did during Liverpool vs Newcastle
At the time of the interval, the Premier League leaders were trailing 1-0, following a wonder strike by Alexander Isak.
It was at that point, during the break in play, that Slot would enter the referee’s room. That has now been criticised by Hackett, given managers are not allowed to take such action at that point in the match .
Speaking to Football Insider about the Liverpool manager entering the referee’s room at half-time at St James’ the former official said:
“There is no wonder that Eddie Howe was fuming after Liverpool Manager Arne Slot visited Referee Andy Madley’s dressing room at half-time.
“This is an absolute no go and the Premier League should drop Slot a line reinforcing the protocol. When I was boss of the PGMOL that protocol was put in place.
“One hour before kick off each manager accompanied by their team captains enter the referees’ dressing room and exchange team sheets which are then copied and handed to the media representative.
“At that meeting a short conversation will take place with the referee highlighting how the captain wishes to be addressed and will be told that they will be the communication conduit between him and his players.
“30 minutes after the game, with the referees permission, a team manager can enter the referees’ dressing room to seek clarification about a decision.
“This protocol should be adhered too. If the Manager is still unhappy then he can speak with the representative of the Premier League at the game, the Match Delegate.
“The Match Delegate is a former player or manager appointed by the Premier League. The Delegate will be in attendance at the team sheet exchange and will critique the referees performance at the conclusion of the game.
“The Delegate will then write a report on the Referees performance and allocate a mark out of 100.”
After the break, Liverpool would find themselves 3-2 up thanks to a fightback led by Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Fabian Schar though, capitalised on a late Caoimhin Kelleher error to snatch a point for Newcastle, meaning the Reds saw their lead at the top of the Premier League table cut to seven points.
In other news, a PSR update has emerged around Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold signing new Liverpool contracts.
