Aston Villa news: Keith Wyness shares new 'worry' in points deduction claim

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the club are likely to avoid a points deduction for breaching financial rules.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs –conceded the belt-tightening at Villa this summer could mean the club don’t have the quality to be a success in the Champions League.

Football Insider revealed on 7 June that Aston Villa must raise £60million in player sales this summer to avoid breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and incurring a potential deduction.

Douglas Luiz is already closing in on a move to Juventus which will see players and cash come to Villa, while Jacob Ramsey and Jhon Duran have been widely linked with exits.

Unai Emery’s side will benefit from injured stars such as Emiliano Buendia, Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara returning to action this summer and during the 2024-25 campaign.

Aston Villa could struggle in Champions League amid PSR concerns, says Wyness

Wyness suggested Villa could dip into the transfer market in January 2025 if things aren’t going according to plan.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think it’s pretty well-known that Aston Villa are close to the PSR threshold.

“I do think they’ll be okay. They’ve got assets to sell, and they will be able to sell those assets.

“I still believe they’ll have a decent squad. Injured players will come back, and they’ll strengthen any positions they lose players in.

“All I’m worried about for Villa is getting the quality needed to be a real success in the Champions League. They’ve certainly got the quality to give it a good go, as it stands.

“They’ve got to see if they can consolidate in the Premier League, and possibly then dip into the market in January.

“They’ll be selling some of the young talent they’ve got – and that’s an opportunity for other clubs.”
