Aston Villa officially respond to Martinez & Ramsey offers

Aston Villa were minutes away from a 10-point Premier League deduction before sanctioning the sale of Douglas Luiz.

Unai Emery’s side faced immense pressure to adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules at the end of last season, leading to the decision to sell the 26-year-old.

According to The Daily Mail, had the deal not gone through, the club would have faced serious consequences for losing more than the £105million allowed by the Premier League.

Juventus secured the central midfielder’s signature in a £42million deal that saw Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea join Villa from the Italian giants for a combined £18.6million.

Aston Villa make PSR great escape

Luiz is yet to start a competitive game for his new club, coming off the bench in all three of Juve’s Serie A games so far this season.

In the end, Luiz was sold over the likes of Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez because they were deemed too important to Emery’s plans.

Quoted in the Mail, Damian Vidagany, Villa’s director of football operations said: “We found ourselves in a situation where we had to make an important profit to avoid being in breach with the PSR.

Sporting director Monchi added: “If we sold Ramsey, it would be solved. And we could have because we had offers. Another solution was to put Ollie Watkins on the market. We could have sold the best keeper in the world, Emi Martinez. We also had offers for him.”

Villa have started the new season strongly, beating West Ham and newly-promoted Leicester City both 2-1 to leave them sat in seventh place after three games.

A 2-0 home defeat to title contenders Arsenal isn’t likely to worry fans too much, despite having beaten the North London club twice last season.

Villa are set to face struggling Everton in a 17:30 kick-off on Saturday, September 15, after the international break.
