'Astonishing' - Murray slams BBC coverage after what's been said about Rangers

Ewan Murray slammed the “astonishing” coverage from BBC Scotland ahead of the Rangers versus Dynamo Kyiv tie.

Presenter Steven Thompson was joined by punditry duo Alan Hutton and Allan McGregor for Tuesday’s (13 August) Champions League qualifier.

Both men have strong links with the Gers from their playing days and made no secret of that when speaking live on air.

However, The Guardian journalist Murray did not take so kindly to the coverage and took a particular swipe at Derek Ferguson, who was on punditry duty for last week’s reverse fixture.

“Stuck on @BBCSportsound last week to hear Derek Ferguson refer to Rangers as “we” time and again,” Murray posted on X [13 August].

“Put it on tonight for more of this Rangers fan boy stuff from various. Astonishing. The BBC [face palm].”

Rangers-centric pundits have every right to back Gers

Had this been Rangers versus Celtic, these comments would have made total sense.

But this is Rangers v Dynamo Kyiv, so Hutton and McGregor have every right to fully back their former club.

In fact, even Celtic fans have been told to get behind Philippe Clement’s men given what a victory would mean for Scottish football.

The BBC’s pre-match coverage was nicely done, setting things up ready for the second leg with the game poised at 1-1 on aggregate.

Rangers struggled to truly get going in the first half and the scoreline remains that way at the midway point of the contest.

If the Light Blues manage to get the job done, Hutton and McGregor should not have to quieten their celebrations.

Sometimes pundits can get away with referring to a club as “we” and “us”, with this being one such example.

In other Rangers news, the Gers are to open negotiations over a new signing.
