'Back it up' - Neil Lennon issues challenge to Rangers man after what he heard him say

Neil Lennon has told Philippe Clement he needs to back it up after his comments on the Rangers clash against Celtic in January.

The Belgian laid down the gauntlet after the Scottish League Cup final defeat against the Hoops and believes he’ll give them a fight at Ibrox on 2 January.

While Lennon acknowledges his former side weren’t at their best at Hampden Park, he expects a more improved display when the two sides meet next.

He said on PLZ Soccer on 20 December at 13:27: “Well, he’s got to back it up then you know so if he has the gauntlet then he’s got to have his team spot on for this game I think Celtic will be better at Ibrox.

“Celtic looked a little bit sort of you know off the pace on Sunday and Rangers threw everything at it. Now they’ve got over that sort of psychological hurdle.

“For Celtic it’ll be a come down from it and they’ll go again there.

“I think they’ll be really up for the game on the 2nd of January.”

Philippe Clement needs Rangers to beat Celtic in January

Clement’s tenure at Ibrox has shown signs of turning a corner, particularly after his assertive comments following the Scottish League Cup final loss to Celtic.

His declaration to give Celtic a fight at Ibrox indicates a renewed vigour and strategy within the squad, suggesting that he’s beginning to implement his vision more effectively.

Despite recent improvements, including a commendable performance at Hampden Park, substantial work remains to ensure Gers can consistently compete at the top level.

A victory against the Hoops would be monumental, not just for the points, but for the morale and confidence of the team and its supporters.

It would serve as a tangible demonstration of Clement’s impact, potentially winning back fans who’ve been sceptical due to the team’s earlier struggles.

This Old Firm derby could be pivotal, providing a platform for the Belgian to solidify his position and prove that his leadership can lead the club to success against their fierce rivals.

In other Rangers news, the SFA president has namedropped the club as a £7million development has emerged recently.
