Rangers have made contact by enquiring about a potential transfer for Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners, according to Soccernet.ng.
The news outlet reported on 20 December that Gers are keen on signing a forward and have identified the 29-year-old South Africa international as the one to lead the line.
Rayners is currently leading the Golden Boot race in the South African Premier Division and the Ibrox hierarchy are keen on bringing him to Glasgow.
Rangers must avoid signing Iqraam Rayners
Gers may need a new striker in January but Rayners does not seem to be the answer.
At 29, he’s already in the latter stages of his career and may take a while to adapt to the Scottish game.
He’s also not experienced in any other league except the South African one so it would be a massive step up for him to do the same at Gers.
Instead, the Ibrox outfit need to go down the route they did with Hamza Igamane and target someone in Europe who is under the radar.
This would mean that they’ll know what they’re getting and also it won’t be an expensive deal, given the club’s financial crunch.
In case money is tight, Cyriel Dessers can be sold as he’s clearly not performing to a high level under Philippe Clement.
However, one thing is clear, the team are looking for a new attacker in January but it’s still not clear whether they’ll sign one or not.
In other Rangers news, Nils Koppen is now being forced to enter the loan market to sign a Liverpool-born striker in January.
