Barcelona give up on Dani Olmo – left-wing position in doubt

Barcelona have highlighted the left-wing position as one of the key areas to strengthen this summer. However their ability to do so is in doubt, and while there are no shortage of players they like, finding a way to bring them to the club is another matter.

There is still uncertainty on Barcelona’s spending power this summer, and Sporting Director Deco has outlined Liverpool’s Luis Diaz as his top target if Raphinha brings in a big transfer fee. MD also report that Dani Olmo of RB Leipzig and Nico Williams of Athletic Club are alternatives to the Liverpool winger.

Olmo has a €60m release clause, and interest from Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Liverpool. Sport say that Olmo is well-liked due to his knowledge of the club and playing style, his versatility and his ability to unbalance his defence. Olmo is set to delay any decision until after the Euros, but that release clause expires on the 15th of July, a day after the final. Yet the Catalan daily also say that his price tag will keep the Blaugrana from moving for him.

Meanwhile Williams also has interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Bayern too – his release clause is not known, but is believed to be approaching €60m too.

It creates a confusing picture, because unless it is only Olmo who they feel is not worth that money, it would rule out a move for Williams and likely Diaz too. The Blaugrana will have some tough decisions to make this summer, and it seems likely that even if Raphinha does not leave, a major sale will need to happen in order for both the midfield and left-wing position to be strengthened.
