BBC journo backs TFG to make Dyche exit decision after Everton win v Ipswich

Phil McNulty admits he still expects Sean Dyche to exit Everton at the end of the season despite the Toffees’ win over Ipswich Town.

The Blues returned from the international break with three points as they ran out 2-0 winners at Portman Road on Saturday (19 October) thanks to goals from Iliman Ndiaye and Michael Keane.

While some have suggested the Toffees’ upturn in form could help Dyche keep his job at Goodison, BBC Sport journalist McNulty still expects the Friedkin Group (TFG) to make a change in the dugout ahead of next season.

Writing in the BBC Sport live blog (21 October, 14:25) he said: “I think Sean Dyche has done well to get Everton into a four-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, with a couple of important wins at home to Crystal Palace then away at Ipswich Town on Saturday.

“He has made them more difficult to score against in recent weeks, a Dyche trademark, while Iliman Ndiaye is a real talent and gives them an “X Factor”.

“As for next season, my guess is that Sean Dyche will not be manager, simply because history tells us new owners – and American billionaire Dan Friedkin is fully expected to complete his takeover – usually want their own manager in charge and the fact Dyche’s contract also ends at the conclusion of this season provides a natural breaking point.

“If Dyche keeps Everton up, and I think he will, then he deserves a lot of respect for what he has achieved at Goodison Park.”

Will Sean Dyche exit Everton amid Goodison Park takeover developments?

As McNulty suggests, Dyche deserves immense credit for guiding the Toffees through a difficult period off and on the pitch over the last few years as very few managers would have stood by the football club.

But the Blues have also made the decision to stand by the former Burnley boss when times have been tough. Although that looks to have paid off, the Friedkin Group may not be quite as willing to make that call.

New owners tend to want new managers and while the takeover hasn’t yet been completed, the signs suggest it won’t be too long before Farhad Moshiri’s time in charge on the blue half of Merseyside comes to an end.

With Dyche’s contract up at the end of the season and a new era on the horizon at Bramley Moore, it does feel as though a change in the dugout is all but inevitable.

Hopefully, Dyche will at least bow out on a positive note.
