Everton’s reported transfer interest in signing Chelsea striker Armando Broja has been described as “curious”.

The Toffees have been linked with a £30million move for the forward [Ben Jacobs, 9 June], who has struggled for opportunities at Stamford Bridge.

However, journalist Christ Beesley has marked the move out as odd, in light of Everton’s significant financial issues.

He wrote for the Liverpool Echo (9 June): “[Everton supposedly pushing to sign Broja for £30m is] a curious claim given Everton’s PSR situation.”

Can Everton afford to pay £30m or more for Armando Broja?

Everton’s substantial debt and financial issues have already seen them fall foul of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), being deducted eight points across two sanctions for breaching those rules in 2023/24.

The Toffees are also facing the threat of administration and Farhad Moshiri still has yet to sell the club, following a protracted takeover saga with 777 Partners that ultimately culminated in the Miami-based firm missing their deadline and their exclusivity agreement coming to an end.

It is possible that potential new owners have promised funding will be made available, boosting Everton’s purchasing power in the transfer market.

If that is not the case – and additional funds are not being generated from elsewhere – it is difficult not to wonder if a big-money move for a striker with a chequered fitness record in recent seasons is exactly the sort of spending that got Everton into the mess they are in in the first place.

In other Everton news, supporters will be buzzing as a Sean Dyche favourite has returned from injury.
